What Works

If you’ve chosen to be a writer, whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, you will see quite a few books and articles regarding the do’s and don’ts if you want to be successful. I’m here to tell you there is no hard and fast rule you must follow to be a definite success. What I will tell you is to read what others have tried in the past and try it. If it works for you, continue using it. If not, either tweak it to your liking or stop using it. We are all different writers with different writing styles. What works for one writer will not work for another.

Example: Characterization
Some writers like to make a detailed personality sketch of their characters. This is a great idea because you can use it to refer back to, while writing your story. Does every author/writer have to do this in order to create great characters that come alive and stand out? Certainly not. You might be the writer/author who would prefer to make a video about your character. How you do this is up to you, of course. Or, you might make it up as you go along. Hey, whatever works for you and creates memorable characters.

Don’t stress yourself out by trying to write how others write and whether or not you’re getting it just right. Use their strategies, but use them in YOUR OWN way.

An Interview

This week I completed an interview with a national magazine. This is one of the photos I used. I enjoy talking about the journey I have been on since I set ‘pen to paper’ writing my first book. It was and still is my dream to write books and tell stories. The road hasn’t been easy though. There were some pot-holes along the way. The key is to stick with it and never ever give up. When the article goes live, I will share the link here on my site.

Mistaken by L. M. Montes

I strolled along in the park one day
enjoying a floral scene,
until a tap on my shoulder I felt
compelled me to turn around,
it was a man with reddened face
who hurled words with daggered grace,
I turned do leave but hit the ground
when me he tripped and there he dwelt,
“Sir, why do you have to be so mean,
I am not the person whose name you say.”

Daily Habits

Daily writing prompt
What are your daily habits?

I start with coffee and sitting in silence with the Lord. Breakfast comes next, then the computer goes on, and I pick up where left off with my manuscript. Physical exercise and a walk then dinner rounds out my day.

When Life Flips That Switch

It’s ok to feel overwhelmed at first when something good or bad happens. That’s normal. So go ahead and feel that overwhelming sensation. Once the shock dies away, your mind will go over the situation and try to come up with ways to work with it. If it helps to hash it out with someone else, do that. Remember that little story about the tortoise and the hare and how slow and steady wins the race? Well, I look at that little story this way; as you’re taking your time to get through whatever it is your going through, your mind is also working on the problem in the background. If you rush through, you might miss something vital and lose out.
