We All Fall

Monday, July 29th, while out for a walk, I tripped on a piece of cement sticking up from the sidewalk. This propelled me forward at a momentum I couldn’t stop, and I ended up flying over the curb, landing on the street, falling on my arms, and smacking the side of my face on the pavement. The result was two broken arms. The left arm was worse off with a broken ulna and a dislocated radius. The radius was popped back into place, but the break needed surgery. My right arm had a hairline fracture only, so my range of motion with it was hindered but not out of commission. I didn’t have a concussion from smacking side of my face on the cement. Overall, I was ok and rested as comfortably as was possible under the circumstances.

That above incident created a domino effect of sorts. The following week the daughter of my dad’s lady friend fell and broke her arms. Then a story of another was shared with me. We all fall. Whether physically or figuratively, we all fall. Some harder than others, but we do. We have two choices here. We can sit and wallow in regret, or we can get up, learn from the situation, and keep moving with our heads up.

Change of Mind (Topics/Issues)

Daily writing prompt
What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

There isn’t. In thinking about this, I found it difficult to find a topic or an issue where I’ve changed my mind. If anything, I’ve dug my heels in more instead of changing my mind. To the angst of some people around me.

I will say, though, that I have changed my mind about some people. To be clear, they weren’t as nasty as I previously thought. The opposite of that is also true. There were those I thought to be upstanding, then found they really weren’t. Wow, how the curtain goes up and reveals all the ‘players’ and motivations behind the actions. It’s mind blowing. I learned from these insights and revelations though, and that’s the important part.

Topics

Which topics would you like to be more informed about?

I really enjoy learning about history, so I’d have to go with that. When I’m writing, I come across topics I’d like to work into my manuscripts. For example, in my last novel physics worked its way in. I enjoyed learning about what I needed to know. But overall, it’s difficult to pin down which topics I’d like to be informed about because they can arise and tap you on the shoulder at any time.

Past and Present

The past will stand its ground, but the present will move out of the way, propelling you forward. Learn from what was, and mold it into something better.

Life at a Slant

Do you feel as though life is nothing but a journey uphill? Do you feel as though running downhill for a change would feel real nice? Stop. Not so fast. When your journey in life is a constant uphill struggle, are you learning along the way? On the other side of that hill, if you are running downhill at a constant momentum, are you learning along the way? Or are you going so fast that those opportunities to learn soar right by at the speed of light?

Fear’s Laughter

Fear can tickle your brain until it crescendos, but if you learn withstand the sensation, you will be numb to it.

Success

Keep in mind, you will not succeed if you do not try. Give what you are doing a chance. I know it’s easy to give up and think success won’t happen. But the truth is this; sometimes success takes a while. If one idea is not working, try something else. Eventually, success will pick up speed.

I am going to pick on writers/authors. They spend many many hours writing their books. At the end of it all, when they publish it, there is marketing to do. If you are a self-published author, you do much of the marketing yourself. My advice, if this is you, learn about how to market your book(s). Maybe you already know. Great! If you have a publisher, they do the marketing for you. If this you, great! Everyone else mostly does it themselves. It can be discouraging at first because not every marketing strategy will work. Here again, you will not succeed if you do not try. You will not figure out what does if you do not try.

Upgrade

What do you want to learn? What interests you? Do you ever know all there is to know about what you do know? Lifelong learning. That’s where it’s at. One of the areas that interests me the most is writing fiction. Even though I write a lot, doesn’t mean I know all there is to know about it. I am always eager to know more. So I look at what others do and take my cue from them. I can use that to come up with my own tricks, so can you. I enjoy reading books about writing. Even though I am published, I still yearn to know more.

But, know this. Take what you learn and make it your own. What works for others might not work for you. I learned this lesson early on years ago. I found that a combination of methods works for me.

Whatever it is you enjoy doing, continue to learn about it. Be a lifelong learner of what you do. Continue to upgrade what you enjoy.
