How do you write what people actually want to read?
There are readers in every genre. So whatever genre you choose to write in, there will be people who will want to read what you write. Keep in mind that not everyone will want to read what you write because everyone is different.
That having been said, you have to know what is trending. Do your research. But does that mean you absolutely have to write what’s popular? No. For example, I wanted to do a book signing at one if our local book stores. When I asked them if I could do that, I was told no because the dominant genre in the area is dark romance, and I don’t write in that genre. I wasn’t about to change my genre because I’m not at all interested in dark romance. At all. There are other book stores which will allow me to do a book signing.
The genre I write in is fantasy. I write what I know readers of Fantasy like to read. Talking to people about what they like and making yourself known as a writer/author helps too. I go to book fairs and craft shows with my books and talk to readers there. That’s part of the fun.
