Genres: Fiction and Nonfiction

Nonfiction: memoirs, essays, research, true crime, true romance, travel, autobiography, self-help, history, narrative nonfiction, descriptive nonfiction, expository, biography, health and wellness, religious, journalism, business economics, science, academic writing, cookbook, humor, political science, and textbook

Fiction: fantasy, mystery, science fiction, romance, western, historical fiction, thriller, young adult, comedy, contemporary fantasy, action, magical realism, children’s literature, action, literary fiction, horror, romantic suspense, dystopian fiction, fairy tale, crime, police procedural, and paranormal

Of course, there are many subgenres under each of the above. That incudes non-fiction as well. If you are a writer and are trying to choose a genre in which to write, choose the genre you enjoy reading. Start there and venture out into other genres. I guarantee you, as an author you will meet other authors who write in a different genre than you. You will be reading their books. When you do, you will find you will want to write in that genre as well. Or not. You may want to stick with the one you chose. That’s ok too.
