Nature’s Concerto by L. M. Montes

Greens of glory glistened
while floating by on turquoise,
trees with yellowed leaves waved
as nature’s orchestra played
a soothing symphony,
lapping water slurped upside
a tiny boat set adrift,
whistling concertos breezed from
holes in wooden rafts of days gone by,
nature plays for nature
when no one is around,
then night time lifts its curtain
and nothing makes a sound.

The Beauty You See by L. M. Montes

Some days arrive and words don’t come,
just relaxation to enjoy in the sun,
beams of light across the grass caress,
inviting air of smoothness to the breath,
lavender floats along in gentle breezes,
creating a break in all that’s really needed,
so come along and smile with ease,
enjoy in life the beauty you see.

Life’s Chase by L. M. Montes

Life walked by and told to sit
so I could grasp and take a hold,
but then as fingers touched its sleeve,
it turned and ran before I bit.

I dashed and followed, giving chase
in hopes of catching what is mine,
but then as I drew close and near,
life turned and told me “in your face.”

Then I tripped into a shallow well
of self and pity as I had failed,
but then a flower before me grew,
my life was mine, I would prevail.

Adding Humor

It’s said that in fiction there must be a pet-the-dog moment. These are times within the story where the protagonist (main character), pets a dog (or other vulnerable creature). What this does is sympathizes your main character. At the same time, if the the pet-the-dog moment is done just right, it will add suspense to the scene or the story as a whole. I have done this with the books I’ve written/published. But…..

I like to also add some humor, kind of sprinkled here and there. What this does is show your MC has a sense of humor as well. In addition, it should also add to your scene (see example below the next paragraph).

Below is an example of humor from my new novel The Cross’s Key. My main character, Kyle Stevens, is trying to glean information from one of the other characters who is being rather difficult or evasive. He does a good job of getting what he wants, while creating humor for the reader at he same time.

Why did you not ask it that way before?”

“My other three brothers would have understood what I was asking,” Kyle spat out. “Now, answer my question. Unless you don’t know. If that’s the case, admit you’re ignorant and send me on my way.” The increase in irritation caused his abdomen to rumble. The result was a noise he hadn’t intended.

“Really, you chose now to pass wind?”

Realizing Jarron must be trying to get on his nerves, Kyle relaxed and chose not to play that game anymore. “Yes, I chose now to pass wind, and I’ll continue to do so unless you answer my question.” For a minute, no one spoke. Then, “I can do this all day,” responded Kyle with a cheesy grin.

Do you have to do this every time? No. Only when I feel the need for it. At the same time, I want my readers to get a chuckle/giggle while they’re reading. s

Yard Work by L. M. Montes

As the rain blew down I stood and pouted,
the sun refused to show or be outed,
grass grew up,
and stood corrupt,
I had to cut it because it sprouted.

There stood a barberry bush with pickers,
it grabbed my shirt and everyone snickered,
I took the shears,
there were no tears,
as the pointed picker bush stood tapered.

Autumn leaves changed color then floated down,
nature now stood bare with a winter frown,
they couldn’t stay,
or forever lay,
so rakes whisked by to gather piles of brown.

Time by L. M. Montes

Time is a circle
round and round
never ending,
at times we stand our ground
but moving forward
forever future bound,
listening then shifting
attention this way and that
to find the reason for a sound,
finding nothing
strolling along life’s journey
and learning lessons found.

Layers by L. M. Montes

Beauty flowed from inner roots,
conveying sweet smelling fruits
of sunshine, smiles, and words,
you frowned on joy
and plucked what did annoy,
but the beauty cascaded onward
kissing cheeks instead of shrinking
with thoughtless worded thinking.
You cut and chopped,
there’s nothing left,
just ground and soil
where beauty once sat,
but did you get the soul inside
where beauty actually does reside,
the layers you may peel,
but beauty you cannot steal.

The Eyes of Heaven by L. M. Montes

The eyes of heaven
shine like winking, blinking stars
forever watching.

Love shoots arrows straight
into hearts of human souls,
ebbing and flowing.

Morning’s Dream by L. M. Montes

The sun winked as it peeked
over the horizon’s edge,
a dark sky faded to dark pink
as light beams struck,
shadows materialized
out of darkness,
casting over lawn,
I woke to breezy tickles
of coffee dancing on my nose,
one eye propped open,
a door creek spoke it’s ‘mornin,’
scents of sizzling bacon
thundered throughout senses,
blanket off,
legs swing ’round,
slip on slippers,
hit the ground,
my eyes wide open,
the door is closed,
it’s still dark,
no coffee I suppose,
the ceiling greets me as I lay in bed,
the clock says midnight,
and I dreamt instead.
