Jobs I’ve Had

Jobs I’ve had in the past were in retail of a couple types. One was working with clothing and such. J C Penny and Fashion Bug were the two stores I worked at back in the 1990’s. Then, from 2017 to 2020 I worked at The Home Depot. But those were positions I considered jobs. At one time I was high school English teacher. Now, that was my career. But was that my calling or what I was meant to do? No. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed teaching. But writing is where my heart is. Intrinsically I get great joy in creating stories, and when I complete one of my books there is a huge sense of accomplishment. I have the Holy Spirit to thank for that, because he helps me every step of the way. Without God I can do nothing on my own and have it turn out well.

The jobs and careers I’ve had, and the one I still have (writing) are great tools to look back on and learn from. Such tools include working with people, working with merchandise, following rules, learning from mistakes made, and going that extra mile when the energy is not there. So much is gained from all of it. Do I have regrets? Yes. Do I regret experiencing those regrets? No. Learning from them and thinking about what I could have done or said better or differently is where those experiences are at and where they’ve taken me.

Life Before the Internet

Daily writing prompt
Do you remember life before the internet?

I remember life before the internet very clearly. There was lack of communication with the rest of the world like we know it now, but that was commonplace. It wasn’t an issue. People resorted to snail mail and landline telephone calls. Lack of information as we know now was also the norm. We didn’t see it as OMG how will we conduct our research? Everyone knew to go to real-time encyclopedias and the library. Life felt normal.

But life with the internet also feels normal. It’s a newer way to gather information, be better informed, and communicate. But, with the internet, sifting through information regarding whether it’s true or not has become a problem. Scammers also use the internet to accomplish their heinous goals, whereas before the internet it was much harder for them to do that.

All in all, I like the internet. But I think it is important to keep one’s head up and use it wisely.

Being Good At

What are you good at?

One of the things I am good at is organizing, when I put my mind to it and am in the mood. Lol, just being honest. That’s not to say I am messy. But there comes a time when you look at your work area and say, “Oh, hell no!”

Having It All

What does “having it all” mean to you? Is it attainable?

To me ‘Having It May’ means having a life in Christ Jesus. Without Him life is empty because there is no forgiveness of my sins. Who would I confess them to? He died for us, thereby removing the sins of all who believe. My life is full. With Jesus I am rich in spiritual wealth. I don’t need money and things to be considered as ‘having it all’.

Talk To

Daily writing prompt
Who would you like to talk to soon?

I would like to talk to my sister. But there’s a trick to this. She’s very difficult to pin down because she’s extremely busy. I am going home to Michigan next month for my dad’s 90th birthday party, so I will see here then and have a chance to catch up.

Most Dear

What personal belongings do you hold most dear?

I have to say that it’s my grandmother’s aquamarine pendant necklace. It’s from the early 20th century. I’m not sure about the exact date. It could be earlier.

Collections

Daily writing prompt
Do you have any collections?

I have always been a strong proponent of not having collections because they take up space. But, if I have a collection that ‘moves’ so to speak, that’s ok. Here’s what I mean. I have a collection of beads of all types, but I create beaded jewelry with them and sell the pieces as craft fairs. There are various reasons why people collect certain items. I decided to collect beads because, even though the cabinet I keep them in takes up space, it isn’t a large space. At the same time I get to do something I enjoy, that is to make something with them and give others joy when they purchase the jewelry I create with them.

Below is a photo of one of my pieces of jewelry.

Broken Bones

Yes, three. When I was four, I decided it would be fun to hang on the arm of one of the flower pots on the side of the house. It was approximately 2 feet by 6 inches and about 6 or 7 inches deep. It was filled with dirt at the time. I wrapped my foot in the angular arm protruding out from the house, grabbed hold of it with my hands, and started swinging. It took one swing and the flower pot came down on my left ankle. I remember that pain like it was yesterday. I am thankful to God for not letting it come down on my head, or I probably would not be here today reliving that experience. Then…..

Last year, July 29 2024, I was on a walk. I had my cellphone in my left hand playing music (no headphones) and going at a pretty good clip. I was on the sidewalk (usually I walk on the street). As I approached the next street, I tripped over a piece of cement sticking up from crack. My knees went out from under me, I couldn’t right myself, and I flew over the curb into the street. I landed on my left side. My phone went flying, my left arm twisted, and the left side of my face smacked against the pavement. My right arm was trying to do its job, and in so doing, twisted as well but not as much as the left. The result? My left arm was dislocated at the elbow (radius), and the ulna was broken in three places. I have a plate and screws keeping it all together. The right arm had a tiny hairline fracture in a small round bone inside the elbow. No cast for the right arm, but it still hurt to the point I needed my husband to do tiny favors for me like opening the tube of toothpaste, LOL. The left had a splint for the first two weeks (after the ER doctor put the radius back in its socket). Two weeks later I had surgery on the three breaks on the ulna to put the hardware in, then it was wrapped for a month.

Now, ten months later, my arms are as good as new.
