Emergency Preparedness

Create an emergency preparedness plan.

I’m a diabetic, so I need to have the right food around at all times. But…when the sugar goes down (way down as it did with me) without a moments notice, the brain has a tendency to not notice the juice right in front of it. Quite literally it was right there and I didn’t notice. I told my son to call 911 (America’s emergency number for those of you who are from other countries and might not know that). In the meantime I found a candy bar, took a bite, swallowed, then collapsed. Yes, right in front of the large bottle of juice I never saw. Once on the floor, I new that, if I succumbed to losing consciousness, it meant coma or death. Neither one appealed to me so I focused on keeping my eyes open, breathing (I had to think to take a breath), and praying. When the EMTs arrived and took my blood sugar, it was determined that it was below 40. The prayers worked. I was white as a ghost…really I was.

My emergency plan is still to have plenty of foods/juices near me, but I must be more in tuned to when I must eat something. The above happened because I was being over medicated for my diabetes, as was determined by my NEW doctor. Yes, I changed doctors. Since then, 2 of the three meds I was on at the time of the above incident have been taken away, and I haven’t had any problems since.
